Beginning as a small spring in Fairfax Stone, West Virginia, this river flows for more than 380 mi (612 km) to Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

Stretching 184.5 mi (297 km), the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park once acted as a lifeline for communities and businesses along the Potomac River. Today the canal acts as a recreational destination, offering mule-draw boat trips and trails to hike, bike and jog on. The main entrance, visitor center and coach parking is located in Great Falls, Maryland, just outside Reston.
